Chiang Rai
The province of Chiang Rai is the most Northern province in Thailand. It is bordering Burma /Myanmar/ on the North, Laos on the West and Chiang Mai province on the Southwest. Chiang Rai is mostly mountainous landscape and covers an area of 11,700 square km /4,600 square miles/. It is located some 800 km /500 miles/ from Bangkok and is easily reachable as there is Chiang Rai International Airport with more than 10 flights a day from Bangkok. The capital city of the province is Chiang Rai.
The ancient city of Chiang Rai was founded in 1262 by King Megrai and was the capital of the Kingdom of Lanna. The Chiang Rai province is most popular with its cultural diversity and natural resources. The most enticing attractions are: Golden Triangle – this is the place where Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet on the Mekong River; Chiang Saen National Museum; Doi Luang National Park with some of the best waterfalls and caves in the province; Phra That Doi Tung; Chiang Rai province is ideal for shopping, picnic, sightseeing or cave tourism.
